HRDC’s Streamline on Thursday, Dec. 8, will mark the end of its successful petition drive in support of creating a local Urban Transportation District by dropping off boxes of thousands of voter-signed petitions at the Gallatin County Elections Office.
HRDC staff and community supporters Mitch Bradley, former owner of Heeb’s Grocery, and ASMSU Senator Alex Masur will speak briefly to the public and media before delivering the signed petitions to election officials.
The petitions are in support of the Gallatin County Commissioners placing a measure on the May 2 school election ballot in support of creating an Urban Transportation District (UTD).
Establishing the UTD will allow Streamline to continue receiving federal funding to help continue its current level of service, and to continue meeting the growing transportation needs of the Gallatin Valley.
Signature-gathering staff and community volunteers collected thousands of signatures at community events and in outdoor public areas from August through November.
A minimum of around 13,000 signatures from voters living within the proposed district are needed to place the measure on the May ballot. Far more than that number were gathered during the signature-gathering drive. The total number of signatures gathered will be made public at this week’s drop-off event.
The successful signature-gathering drive is the first step to creating a UTD. The next steps include:
- The County Elections Office has 30 days to verify signatures and confirm HRDC’s Streamline met the signature requirement of 20% of registered voters living in the proposed district.
- The Gallatin County Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed UTD ballot issue before placing the issue on the ballot.
- Voters living within the proposed district will have the opportunity to approve the Gallatin Valley Urban Transportation District when it appears on the May 2 school election ballot.
