Development of the West Babcock Neighborhood commenced in 1995 with the development of the West Babcock Apartments and Head Start Center. Phase 1 included 24 rental homes for families, with a mix of 2 and 3-bedroom units, park space, and an Early Childhood education facility. Shortly thereafter, the West Babcock Land Trust was developed, providing 20 single-family homes. The project was Montana’s first Community Land Trust, paving way for CLTs around the state. The final phase of the neighborhood was the development of two small-footprint homes. The Humble Homes, completed in 2018 were created using the City’s Affordable Housing Ordinance in partnership with the local homebuilder’s association as a proof of concept for building on small lots.
